Pretty Names

This is a quick note.

The other day I've finally found out from where Gnome's Nautilus picks up the name for the volume mounted as the file system in the left pane. I never bothered about it, I noticed long time ago that in two Debian installations they were different, but I've always forgot to investigate.

So it's somewhat related to the infamous systemd 1, and specifically to the hostnamectl command. The relative documentation mentions "pretty name" and "icon name" both stored in the /etc/machine-info file. It looks like Nautilus puts the host "pretty name" in the left pane.

Mystery solved.

Another thing I've never noticed until today is that the editable form "Device name" in the Gnome Settings "system details" modifies the above "pretty name" and the system hostname. I don't remember to have read it about it in the documentation.

  1. my position in the debate is I have nothing against systemd↩︎
